What we do

Our experience defines our offer - Caroline and Alex both have 20 years of experience in design and advertising. This allows us to undertake projects in media spanning both the digital realm and the old world. Throughout those years we have been adapting and innovating in response to the digital revolution.

Rupert Ray is able to create finely tuned stories for people and brands, deliberately crafted for specific media. The company is ‘output focussed’, using strategy to deliver tangible projects from websites and applications to graphic design and moving image.

Through the disciplines of visual branding, illustration, graphic design, and moving image (including animation and live action) Rupert Ray creates ‘Content’ & ‘Interactive Content’.

Why we do it

We are conscious we live in a time criticised for its shallow engagement with content described by Nicolas Carr (in his book, ‘The Shallows’) as the ‘Strip Mining’ of information whereby the audience never engage in the ‘Deep Excavation’ of meaning which would lead to ‘Genuine Engagement’.

That is the challenge for Rupert Ray.

We ‘Tell Stories’ which must communicate brand values & raise brand awareness. But to get beyond those surface impressions we must design rewarding experiences for the audience (through sharing valuable opinion, or giving insight or through pure inspiration) so that they can effortlessly uncover deeper meaning.

The process of conversion from casual observer to active participant must be achieved with the minimum of demands expected of the viewer. You could liken it to ‘Osmosis’ (movement without input of energy) Where the shallow interaction is converted effortlessly into deeper engagement if the audience feel rewarded.

Who is 'Rupert Ray?'

In the late 19th Century a young man, the last child of nine, not much more than a boy, left his privileged but unhappy home to make his own way and forget the past. He had a penchant for adventure, a reckless disregard for his own shortcomings and a hunger for knowledge that would place him close to the eye of a storm overtaking his world.

His young adult life saw the end of an age of empire, of inherited privilege and a culture of deference. Through the transformations wrought by horrors of two successive wars Rupert Ray witnessed the awakening possibilities of meritocracy (which he exploited) and the emancipation of strong willed women (whom he loved too much). Acquiring artisanal and engineering skills before duty in the fledgling Air Corps, he became an accomplished artist.

Later in life he lost no thirst for change, becoming a patron of the arts and embracing a new and unsettling visual and literary culture born in the salons of Paris, the pubs of London and the coffee shops of Edinburgh.

By some accident of fate Alex and Caroline both happen to be (albeit distantly) related to him. We love the story, the myth and the spirit of restless adventure he displayed so it seemed most appropriate to name the company after him.
